Frequently asked questions
HomeNet doesn't find some of my devices.
Make sure Local Network access is on for HomeNet (iPhone and iPad: Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network; Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network), that your device is on the same network as the others, and that a guest network or “AP isolation” isn't blocking traffic. Some devices don't answer ping; the Standard scan mode also reads names and services.
Why are there no MAC addresses or vendor names on my iPhone?
iOS doesn't let apps read other devices' MAC addresses, so MAC-based vendor names are mostly available on Mac. On iPhone and iPad you can copy your router's DHCP client list and bring the MAC addresses in with Devices → Add → Paste from Router…
Why does the Wi-Fi tool ask for Location?
Apple treats Wi-Fi network names as location information, so iOS and macOS require Location access before an app can show them. HomeNet never reads, stores or sends where you are. On iPhone and iPad, Apple doesn't allow apps to scan for other Wi-Fi networks, so HomeNet measures the network you are connected to; on Mac it lists nearby networks and channels.
Are my passwords safe?
Account and Wi-Fi passwords are stored only in the Keychain. They are never written to the database, backups, exports, logs, Spotlight or widgets. In Settings → Passwords you can require Face ID or Touch ID before they are shown.
How do I sync, back up or move my data?
Sign in to iCloud on each device and keep Settings → iCloud → Sync with iCloud on. To back up or move data by hand, use Settings → Data → Export All Data to create a .homenet file, then Import… on the other device. Passwords sync only through iCloud Keychain.
Why is Wake on LAN unreliable on iPhone and iPad?
iOS limits sending to broadcast addresses. When it blocks the broadcast, HomeNet sends the packet directly to the device's last known address, which only works while the network still remembers the device. A Mac sends the standard broadcast.
Where do the model library numbers come from?
From each manufacturer's own published specifications, with the source shown for every model. Treat them as planning values and check the product label or a power meter.
